Use Your Mind and Your Body Will Follow

When you attend a FlowLIFT class in person or online, you will see that the teacher is always facing the same way as the students, demonstrating the entire time. The view of the teacher is from behind so that you can copy exactly what they are doing. Occasionally we get students commenting on the lack of personal attention from the teacher. They say “I wish you would walk around the room and adjust people.” One woman said to us recently, “I need you to come over and fix me.” There are several reasons why the teacher demonstrates the whole time, both in the studio and in our yoga sculpt online classes.
The moves in FlowLIFT are intricate and complex, especially the floor moves. We aren’t just throwing our bodies around, everything we do is specifically designed to yield certain results. For example, from an all fours position, there are a variety of ways we kick the leg to initiate a move. It might be straight back, at a diagonal position or an arabesque. Every floor move will have a different kick that employs different muscles in the hip, core and leg than the one before and after it. A visual demonstration ensures that students will see and feel the subtle nuances of these different actions.
The pace of the FlowLIFT class is a rapid, non-stop flow. There is no pausing for rest, no stopping to change equipment, and every move flows seamlessly into the next. There are many benefits to this such as a profuse and cleansing sweat along with burning up extra body fat. Every kick, punch, roll, lunge, squat and flying move needs to be perfectly demonstrated by the instructor so that the students don’t get lost and maintain their pace throughout the class.

FlowLIFT benefits far more than your physical body. Because of the complicated moves, students have no chance to tune out and let their mind wander. You must stay completely focused and present in order to execute everything correctly. We know that it can be frustrating when you can’t figure what to do with your body in class. You have questions in your head like “am I doing this right?” “do I look like an idiot?” “I need help!”
These are all opportunities for growth. Watch the teacher in the first few reps when they are breaking it down. Take your time going through the motions. It is better to be slow and clean rather than fast and sloppy. As you get more familiar in the first few reps, you may find that you can speed it up and move to the beat of the music. If you don’t master the move before the next one begins, just let it go. At least you tried and relied on yourself rather than someone else to figure it out. Put your mind and body together during each minute of the FlowLIFT class. When this happens we find total presence, and in that presence is a beautiful high that is bolstered by your incredibly hard work to get through this 45 minute ass kicking.
Whether you are in the studio or taking our yoga sculpt online classes, if you follow our rules, you won’t get hurt. You don’t need hands on adjustments or personal attention from the instructor. Cultivate the ability to crush this class while being mindful of the following:
- Every move is a core move. Keep the core engaged and move from your center. The limbs follow the trunk.
- Keep your arms and legs engaged from the periphery to the core. Never flail or snap your limbs.
- Go at your own pace. You do not need to go as fast as the instructor or the people around you.
- Once you have figured out the move, you can try to go with the beat of the music. Don’t speed up until you’re clean and strong.
- If something irritates or hurts a joint, such as the knee or shoulder, take a break or figure out a way to modify.
