Magdalena Patterson FlowLIFT Extraordinaire
Magdalena is a mom, yoga teacher, FlowLIFT instructor, wife, workout junky and stylish hottie all rolled up into one. She’s been Teaching FlowLIFT since the beginning and as a master instructor she’s now certifying yoga with weights students in La Jolla, California. We recently sent her a long list of questions so you can also fall in love with her like we have.
Why Do You Love Teaching FlowLIFT Yoga with Weights
I love how FlowLIFT seamlessly blends yoga and fitness. I was a personal trainer and group exercise instructor for years before becoming a full time yoga teacher. I still loved a really sweaty workout, but was not into the gym vibe anymore. FlowLIFT brought back the sweat and hard workout in the format of a smooth yoga class and in the setting of a zen yoga studio. I mean, perfection!
Did You Have Prior Experience Teaching Fitness Before Becoming a FlowLIFT Teacher
Yes! I used to teach everything from Body Pump to boot camps and always loved the group energy of a workout class. Back in my “gym” days, I had the reputation of having the toughest classes and people were scared of me. I like bringing that toughness back with FlowLIFT.
Has FlowLIFT Made a Difference in Your Body or Mind
Definitely!!! As a FlowLIFT teacher, you just can’t “take it easy” while you teach. You have to be fully, one hundred percent present in every single move. You have to keep up the pace and class energy no matter what. Basically, every single time you teach, you totally kick your own butt! The adrenaline kicks in, and somehow you can talk through every single move without ever taking a break. So you definitely tap into your mental toughness — knowing you just have to push through. Yoga with weights is no joke, especially this version of it. Also, every move is a core move. There is no muscle isolation because you are working your entire body with every single move. I think it’s so important, especially for us women, since we really cannot afford to waste time with isolation moves or workouts that don’t pack the punch. Our metabolism slows down faster than men’s so we really have to work so much harder. That’s where the floor moves really come in place. So many of these are done on your elbows or one elbow, and it really challeges your core upper body in a whole new level. You think the floor moves are all about the booty, but it’s really so much more.
What’s on Heavy Rotation in Your Playlists Right Now
I Always love me some Lady Gaga. I think she’s in every single FlowLIFT playlist that I’ve ever put together.
What Would You Say to Someone Thinking About Doing a FlowLIFT Yoga with Weights Training?
Take the challenge, step out of your comfort zone and do it! You might say to yourself now, “there’s no way I can teach this class,” but believe me, the training gives you all the right tools and confidence to be a rockstar teacher. You will be surprised how much you learn and how it will challenge your body and your mind. Go to the FlowLIFT certification page to learn more. I’ll be teaching the summer training at Buddhi Yoga La Jolla on July 25th!
What Would You Say to Guys Who Are Intimidated by Trying the Class in a Group Setting?
Just give it a try and then decide for yourself. I’ve always had guys in my group exercise classes, and now in FlowLIFT, and they are always so surprised at how much it kicks their butt. The faster pace, lower weight and higher reps is something that is so challenging for guys. You simply just don’t get that when you “lift weights” in the gym. Think of if like a fun “cardio” day with so many more benefits. Your mobility, core strength, flexibility and posture will thank you!
Do You Have to Be At a Certain Fitness Level or Age to Do FlowLIFT Classes
No. FlowLIFT accommodates all ages and levels. There’s no mirrors and no one competes with you because everyone is just trying to get through the class in their own way. If that means you only do half of the repetitions or only partial moves, it’s totally fine! I have students of all ages from beginners to fitness buffs and moms with their daughters next to each other. I even get pregnant mamas coming to the classes! I myself did FlowLIFT through my entire second pregnancy and I could tell the difference it made. My hip stability, overall strength and stamina improved and it made it easier to get back in shape after I gave birth.
Tell Us About Any Projects You’re Working On
I’m always working on my Prenatal Yoga and Mommy and Me projects. It’s my little passion and I love the camaraderie and community aspect around these classes. I see so many friendships develop in prenatal yoga and it warms my heart. Also, I have a chance to introduce yoga to women who have never taken it before. Most women in prenatal classes have never done yoga before, and what better time to start than while a tiny human is growing inside of you? The baby feels the calming and relaxing effects of yoga too. I also have a workout app for new moms with prenatal & postnatal yoga videos, and I’m working on a podcast about prenatal yoga and everything pertaining to pregnancy.
Do Your Kids Ever Practice at Home with You
All the time. It’s our daily routine. They each have a yoga mat and we roll them out almost every morning. They mostly just fool around, but I get my morning yoga and workout on. Even if it’s just a quick cat/cow flow, a few dogs, some planks and pushups, it all makes for such an energizing start of the day.
What’s Your Favorite Thing About this Yoga with Weights Workout
