When you think of the word stress, immediately we think of something that needs to be avoided and relieved. However this is not always the case. If you really want your yoga workout to be effective, putting stress on the body is key. What exactly does this mean? Ask yourself one simple question. When you roll into your favorite sculpt, pilates or barre class, are you pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone? Is it intense enough that there are brief moments where you think you might barf? If not, you’re probably just hum-drumming along without any real results. You check the “I worked out today” box, however it was probably the same old routine that you’ve been phoning in for months or even years. When people say “FlowLIFT is too hard.” We say, “damn right it is.” If it’s not hard, it’s not worth your precious time.
3 Reasons Your Current Yoga Workout is Too Easy
Oops, forgot to elevate my heart rate. Yoga style workouts like Pilates and Barre are great for toning the body, but the heart rate stays relatively steady. Without the high intensity hit of an elevated heart rate, it’s very difficult to burn fat. It’s also important to put a healthy amount of stress on the heart. It will become a stronger muscle and pump oxygen and blood through the body with more efficiency.
There are tons of yoga workout classes that use weights. However you will be hard pressed to find classes besides FlowLIFT that use ankle weights. The triple threat of dumbbells, ankle weights and using the body for resistance puts just the right amount of stress on the muscles. We don’t recommend overdoing it with the amount of weight because of how intense FlowLIFT is. Stick to 2.5 lb on the ankle and 3 lb in each hand for the perfect recipe. The added resistance will push the muscles to perform at their highest levels. This stress creates little tears in the muscles that the body will repair and in that process make them stronger and more toned.
State of Mind
When we are young we have an enormous amount of energy to burn. Even in high school when we want to sleep in everyday, we could still bang it out on the soccer field for an hour after school. There is a sense of competition and camaraderie with our teammates if we were athletes. You could feel this also if you were a dancer or a martial artist. There were stakes and your effort meant something. Not just to you, but to the people you’re working hard with. Somewhere in adulthood we may lose this mentality. We are busy with our families and jobs. We might forget the wonderful euphoria that comes with digging really deep during physical exertion.
FlowLIFT provides countless opportunities to dig deep. If it’s too hard, move slower…but keep moving! Try not to quit or stop. When the mind says “I can’t keep going,” turn on a new voice that says “oh yes I can.” Reconnect with that part of yourself that knows how to push through to reach new levels of intensity. This isn’t just about looking good, it’s about growing stronger and building both physical and mental endurance. This is one of the many reasons we want our teachers to demonstrate the class the entire time. We’re right there with you, pushing hard and growing strong with each squat, kick, punch and lunge.
